How Your Child Progresses at New City Martial Arts
At New City Martial Arts, grading is far more than a belt change.
It is a structured system designed to ensure that every child is developing correctly, safely, and confidently — both as a martial artist and as a person.
This article explains exactly how grading works within our Kickboxing programme, why it exists, and how parents can best support their child’s journey.
Grading Shows Real, Measurable Progress
Grading exists to demonstrate genuine improvement.
Each grade represents that a student has shown:
- Appropriate technical ability for that level
- Understanding of the syllabus
- Good training habits
- Consistent effort
- Positive attitude and behaviour
Belts at NCMA are not awarded for time served.
At NCMA, a belt represents ability, not time served.
This ensures that every belt holds real meaning and value.
How Often Do NCMA Kickboxing Gradings Take Place?
Kickboxing gradings take place once per quarter, provided attendance levels are where they should be.
If students are not training regularly, they should not expect to grade.
Students generally grade alongside others of the same level.
Intermediate and Advanced students may sometimes recap lower-belt material as part of their own grading in the background.
This maintains technical standards across all levels.
Who Is Eligible to Grade?
To be eligible for grading, students must demonstrate:
- Good attendance
- Technical ability that matches their current grade
- Clear understanding of their syllabus
We operate a readiness-based system:
- Students are invited to grade when ready
- Students may be held back if standards are not met
Being held back is not a punishment.
It is protection of the student’s confidence, safety, and long-term development.
What Do We Assess During Grading?
Grading is not only about physical techniques.
We also assess:
- Attendance
- Attitude
- Focus
- Effort
- Behaviour
- Respect
- Discipline
- Courage
- Teamwork
- Leadership
Martial arts is about building people — not just teaching strikes.
The Student Journey at NCMA
Every child follows a progressive pathway:
Foundations → Skill Development → Understanding → Control → Confidence → Recognition
Belts simply mark points along that journey.
The Importance of the Syllabus
The syllabus is your child’s roadmap.
Training without using the syllabus is like trying to play golf blindfolded.
We strongly encourage students and parents to regularly review the Kickboxing syllabus:
Even 5–10 minutes of light home practice per week can make a huge difference to:
- Confidence
- Technique quality
- Retention
- Grading success
Why Not Every Child Grades Every Cycle
Children develop at different speeds.
Not every student will grade every quarter — and that is healthy.
Rushing belts leads to:
- Gaps in knowledge
- Loss of confidence
- Frustration later
Holding standards protects long-term progress.
Parent Involvement Makes a Difference
Children who stay in martial arts long-term almost always have engaged parents who understand the process.
We encourage parents to:
- Ask what their child learned
- Look through the syllabus together
- Encourage consistent attendance
- Support light home practice
When parents understand the pathway, children thrive.
Grading Fees
Grading fees vary by grade level and are always communicated in advance.
Our Responsibility as Coaches
Our role is not simply to entertain.
Our role is to help build:
- Stronger bodies
- Better focus
- Higher confidence
- Positive habits
- Disciplined, respectful young people
Grading is one of the key tools that allows this development to remain structured, measurable, and meaningful.
Final Thought
Belts are not the goal.
Personal growth is the goal.
Belts simply show the journey.
